The collection features seminal primary sources that provide the foundation for American politics including The Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson’s first inaugural address, select Federalist papers by James Madison, Abraham Lincoln’s speech on the Dred Scott Decision, George Washington’s Whiskey Rebellion Proclamation, and more. Students read compelling articles, essays, and excerpts such as “Our Teacher, the Constitution” by Adam Carrington, book chapters from Aristotle’s The Politics, reflections on Constitutional interpretation by former Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, and analysis of what is wrong with the American political system by John R. Hibbing and Elizabeth Theiss-Morse. 

Featuring 56 individual readings selected for novice learners of the American political system, A Well-Constructed Union is an ideal text for courses in American politics and government.

Peyton E. Wofford is a lecturer in the Department of Government at Stephen F. Austin State University, where she teaches courses in American government. She earned her Ph.D. in political science with emphasis in political theory and American politics from Texas A'M University and her B.A. in political science from Baylor University. Dr. Wofford has published articles within her discipline in Texas Government: Theory ' Politics and Administrative Theory ' Praxis, for which she serves on the editorial board.
