The Well-Beloved
The Well-Beloved: O poszukiwaniu ideału w sztuce i miłości
- Two on a Tower: The novel "Two on a Tower" is one of the most famous works of the author. An atmospheric, dynamic story throws the characters at the disposal of forces far beyond their control. Lady Viviet, violating all the rules of decency, falls in love with Cleve, who is not only below her in social status, but also the youngest by 10 years. In an ancient monument turned into an astronomical tower, the heroes create their own universe ...
- The Hand of Ethelberta: Hardy’s fifth novel, entitled "Comedy in Chapters." In a typical Hardy manner, the story is based on a love triangle. Ethelberta and her involuntary sister Picoti are in love with the same man, Christopher, who reciprocates Ethelberta’s feelings. However, a happy result for them is out of the question, because it is poor.
- Tomahawk Rights: This is the story of the border war during the Revolution and immediately after it. The hero is captured during the Indian raid. He respects his Indian friends even in those bitter years when he fights with them like a border ranger. In the book you can feel the spirit of the time.
- The Woodlanders: The novel takes the reader to the very depths of rural England. The small village of Hintok, the scene of the novel, is so small that it’s even hard to find in the thicket of the forest, but this is where the tragedies of “truly Sophocles greatness” are played out. The reason for these tragedies is the clash of natural human characters preserved in the reserved wilderness of rural England.
- The Obeah Murders: The novel begins with the fact that Phil Nevitt, an employee of an American alcoholic beverage company, goes to Annunziata, the mythical island of Futner’s creation in the West Indies, to learn everything he can about the Randall Trantora rum. „The Obeah Murders” show their fantastic roots with so many genre influences (spy, western, adventure, supernatural and detective). In the end, however, the race issue was the most surprising and, ultimately, the most important aspect of the book. More Footner reviews will appear later this summer.
- Smith and the Pharaohs, and Other Tales: Rider Haggard, just like his main character in this story, is not indifferent to Ancient Egypt. The events of the four stories take place in Africa. Here several acts overlap: extraordinary courage and an epic clash of different cultures. The main theme remains unchanged: the theme of love, which lasts until death.
- Alexander the Great: Jacob Abbott gave us the opportunity to plunge past. To step back in time a read about a man who had such an impact of the world. The author takes you into the tent of Alexander and you can see with his eyes that very way to the top. The author in detail show chronological events of Alexander, right from his birth to his death.
- In Polar Seas: The works of Fenton Ash are highly prized among bibliophile collectors of classic sci-fi and fantasy. Fenton Ash was a pseudonym of Francis Henry Atkins (1847-1927), who contributed widely to the pre-science fiction pulp magazines, writing at least three Lost-World novels along with much else. „In Polar Seas” is a romance of adventure in the frozen North, targeted mainly at juvenile readers but billed as being „for readers of all ages,” it describes the adventures of a team of British explorers who discover a lost Viking civilization in a hitherto unknown temperate zone near the North Pole. If
- The Man in Ratcatcher: The Man in Ratcatcher – an exciting collection of short stories. The story about the veterans of the First World War. As well as the story of the redemption, about what little is written about in the history books. A lot of interesting story, but frightening as well.
- The Stumbling Shepherd: Thanks to the main character, readers will be able to understand the value of books. It all starts with the fact that he finds an amazing book. The writings of the early fathers of the Church in their gloomy bindings occupied the lowest shelf. Above them, rank by rank, were collected church stories, ancient, modern and medieval. All the articles on his desk were organized according to his preferences.
